Dr. Alice Krippin (Emma Thompson) creates a cure for cancer. Still, the treatment has terrible side effects. A virus is born that turns those infected into vicious flesh-eating creatures.

Dr. Robert Neville (Will Smith) is immune to the virus and remains in New York, infested with these creatures. He stays behind to try and find a cure.

I Am Legend creates a good sense of isolation, atmosphere, and survival. This is a party due to the excellent cinematography. The deserted city looks great.

I Am Legend Will Smith And Dog

The visuals are impressive, which helps set the mood. We also see wild animals roaming the city, including lions hunting around the city.

The acting by Will Smith is excellent. He does a very believable job of a man spending years in isolation and going slowly insane.

The creatures themselves are fast, intense, and scary. Their CG creations, rather than actors, using CG seem to work well. It gives them a more menacing and less human appearance.

I became very immersed in this movie, and I enjoyed the experience of watching it, one of my favorite movies of 2007.

This may not be an actual Zombie movie, but it creates the same kind of feel as some of the best Zombie films, and it should be enjoyed by most.

Review:

Let us start with all the good things about the movie. Will Smith performs admirably in this film. It's challenging to carry a film when you're the only character most of the time.

That's it. You're engaging with yourself and a dog. I am Legend had a "Castaway" vibe to it in that regard, and while Smith doesn't quite pull off a Tom Hanks solo performance, he does a good job.

I Am Legend Will Smith And Dog 2

We witness him doing his hardest to live a regular life and progressively losing his sanity while saving the planet.

The CGI wasn't excellent, and some didn't like it. Still, I'm curious what they're comparing it to because I'll tell you that they performed the best job right now.

I've never seen creating human beings in full lead 3D animation interacting with natural settings.

Because human minds have no point of comparison for such things, it's easy to make giant robots or alien animals, a person or an animal.

I Am Legend An Infected

However, it's a whole different tale. Although the technology is far from flawless, the VFX artists in this picture performed an outstanding job filling out multiple assignments.

I enjoy films that make the main character feel like there is no hope for them, and I Am Legend achieved that in several instances.

He was screwed due to his basic plight as the only human alive, with all the infected trying to tear his tasty neck meat out.

But some very thrilling action moments had you on the edge of your seat.

As good as it seems, it also had some bad parts. As any good scientist would, Will Smith keeps meticulous notes and memoranda.

He even makes a video entry into the computer describing how one of the infected individuals poked his head into the light for a second, which was out of character for them.

However, one of the infected (minor spoiler) lays an intricate booby-trap for Smith to fall into in a different scenario. These are intended to be irrational fury machines.

This one, in particular, demonstrates sophisticated thinking and planning. Yet, Smith never repeats anything about it in the film. Ever.

That may seem insignificant, yet it stood out to me.

Even though Smith did an excellent job holding my interest even when he was the only one on the screen.

I couldn't buy Will Smith as the world's most outstanding military geneticist the US government counts on to rescue the planet.

I Am Legend An Infected Couple

I couldn't believe it because of all the other traits of the role he portrays, not because I couldn't buy Smith.

Warrior, bodybuilder, and everything in between made buying him a clever scientist a stretch.

Once the afflicted individuals were shown, the picture lost a little of its essence. Nevertheless, I enjoyed Will Smith's straightforward survival narrative, and the fear of the infected in I Am Legend.

However, as the infected unleashed in full force, the movie seemed to dumb down.

It wasn't as fantastic as it may have been, but it was still a fun night at the movies. Smith is dependable, the idea is sound, and they navigate this strangely empty universe with ease.

It was not lousy action and suspense, though it could have been a little shorter because the film begins to lose your attention after the first hour.

I hope you enjoyed my review of I Am Legend.
